25th June 2016 - Newhay Lakes (Course Lake)

Christ I'm going to die....... That was my thought as I threw my guts up at 2am this morning. At 2.20am on getting back to bed, it dawned on me that I had to get up an hour and half later to go fishing. Oh my god what have I done!!
I'd been on an afternoon sesh yesterday with my old work friends who I hadn't seen for nearly a year. Granted I probably only had a total of 9 bottles but when you've been referred to as "2 pint Dave" before then 9 bottles is a lot haha. As per usual when I have a drink the waking up in the middle of the night to be sick routine followed...
Anyway, at 3.50am I got up, packed the car and headed to Dads. From there I would jump into Dads car and head to Newhay Lakes.
Newhay Lakes is a venue only 20 minutes from Dads but a venue we hadn't fished before.
As we entered the venue it was obvious that I was going to like this place.
We had a little walk round the lake we were to fish (course lake) and also a little look at the 8 peg Speci' lake. The pegs we were advised to fish on the course lake had already been taken by Bivvy boys (God knows why they weren't on the speci' lake). We plumped for the two pegs straight Infront of the gate as you walk in. The lake has no proper pegs, its just flat grassed banking, something I prefer. The banking was quite high though to the point where You couldn't reach the water to fill mix your groundbait. Dads pole cupping kit came in handy to collect the water though. The lake is quite large and at a guess can probably home 30 anglers. There are no islands on this water but there are trees, reeds etc to fish to.
The match started at 7.05am and was to be a 7 hour match.
The first two hours were fantastic for me, a Grass Carp of just under 5 lb started the day, followed by a Common Carp of just under 7lb and a Bream gained me an early lead over Dad, who on the pole had netted two decent Ide Hybrids. The third hour was busy too, I netted a Crucian, a Rudd, a Bream and a 5 lb Mirror Carp. Dad had a good hour too, another decent Ide Hybrid had found its way into his net, along with quite a few Roach and a cracking 3 lb Perch. Hour number 4 was good for Dad too, more Roach, although only small they were plentyful. Back over in my swim things had died, a Rudd and Bream the only two fish i landed. Hour number 5 was poor for me with no fish caught and Dad steadily catching Roach and nearing my overall weight total.
Damn.. Hes going to catch me I thought. 2 Hours to go and I couldn't buy a bite. The weather was lovely though. Warm and sunny with a slight breeze. Come on I said to myself trying to urge myself on. Just then my rod smacked round and off it went speeding across the lake. I played the fish and as it got close to me it appeared at the surface and it was a cracking Ghost Carp of around 6 lb. I looked down to see where my net handle was and off it sped again this time snapping my line. FFS !!!! Gutted....
The last 90 minutes saw me land one more fish, a Rudd whilst Dad hadn't stopped and had built a lead of about 2 or 3 pounds.
As the final whistle blew I could only look back at what could have been. That pesky Ghost Carp!!!! That would have won me the 4 points but the fact I couldn't land it and the fact that Dad had caught pretty much all day the victory was deservedly Dads.
4-1 Win to Dad like just last week and the comeback on. My lead is now down to 14 points and for the first time this season I'm looking over my shoulder.
I really like Newhay, its a peaceful relaxing venue where you really dont know what you are going to catch... 17 different species make it a superb fishing lake

Next week will be a landmark for me, my 50th different water fished. Get the funfare ready I will win, I just have to !!!
