Once again going to bed at 1am seemed like a stupid thing to do as the alarm went off this morning at 4.45am
I got out of bed and opened the bedroom blinds to reveal a rainy murky start to the day. I checked the forecast for Thirsk and rain was due up there too.
Ah well I thought as I got washed and changed and loaded the car.
I set off at 5.30am and the hour drive from Leeds to Thirsk was done nearly all in the dark.
I arrived at Woodlands Lakes at 6.30am just as the sun was rising. I've fished many of the 13 lakes at Woodlands but not this one, so today was going to be very new for me. I was shocked on entry to the lake to see two lads fishing. (I thought I was the only one daft to get up this early to fish in what was by this stage torrential rain). After a little look round the lake I decided on one of the pegs that was the least muddy. Its Woodlands original lake and is very natural but this leads to it becoming very muddy during bad weather. Some of the pegs on the far side of the lake were simply too boggy so I chose a peg near to the entrance of the lake. One of my biggest issues with the Woodlands complex is the litter problem they have there. There are few bins so rubbish gets left all around the lakes which is really off-putting and for a place so big is unacceptable.
I decided to use my oldest rod today. A Shimano Alivio BX. Not sure why, I just fancied it today.
My first cast was at 7.15am and I was ready for a 5 hour session.
The weather by this stage was unbelievable. Rain lashed down and the temperature was so very cold. It was not an easy morning and impossible to get comfortable especially under the brolly.
It was a frustrating start as in the first hour and half Id had at least six big rod bending bites but no takes... very unusual to say I was method feeder fishing (elasticated methods).
The next hour and half were more fruitful as I landed 3 bream (skimmers) nothing more than 1 lb.
Between 10am and Noon was my most productive time as I netted 3 more bream (skimmers) and a 2 lb mirror carp.
Then, just as I was about to pack up my rid started jerking downwards and I knew what that meant.... Sure enough a lovely 2 lb 4 oz tench was netted.
So not a great day fishing wise and a truly awful day weather wise but all in all I enjoyed the session and its another lake I will go back to In the warmer months.
