I was house sitting for one of my Brothers the previous night and was driven crazy by his two mental kittens so once again I had no sleep before what was due to be my 3rd "match" of the season against my Dad.
The alarm went off and I was surprised that the expected downpour due all over Yorkshire hadn't materialised (well It had the night before but wasn't raining at present)
I called back to my house to collect my tackle and off I went.
I wasn't sure how to get to the venue, which was to be Tyram Fisheries in Doncaster so I'd planned to meet Dad at his house in Cawood and then go together in his car. My car was due at the Garage in a couple of days anyway so the drive to Cawood was all I wanted to do in my car until sorted.
I met Dad at 5.35am and after putting my gear into his car we set off on route to Tyram. Id been looking forward to this trip after viewing their very good website. We arrived at Tyram Fisheries at 6.45 and to be honest I was very shocked. The place was a dump..... A boarded up house and a boarded up restaurant were the first things we saw as we entered the site. We got out of the car and had a walk across what can only be described as marsh land and inspected the 2 lakes nearest to the car park. Both were in a shocking state. Litter and rubble surrounded the place and the pegs on the lakes were all broken. The entire site looked like it had been derelict for twenty years... We couldn't fish this place no way....
We got back in the car and decided we would give the fishery just down the road from Tyram a try. The place was called Woodhouse Grange and wasn't one I was familiar with.
We entered the grounds and within minutes the gate opened at 7am. We drove in and it was apparent that the fishery was large. It had 6 lakes but none had any signs and we didn't know which had matches on (if any) so we parked up and asked a guy who was walking round. He told us to park up and enter the office/cafe/shop building and he would meet us there and tell us. The site in places resembles a scrap yard with machinery and junk almost everywhere in some areas of the complex. It wasnt a very appealing place and not good on the eye. The bloke told us that we could fish either Kingfisher or Willows lake and he advised us that Kingfisher was the better of the two so after purchasing the fishery pellets and our day tickets we got back in the car and drove down to Kingfisher Lake.
Kingfisher lake is rectangular in shape with three central islands. Its quite a nice looking lake with features down the edges too. On the back of the advise we were given we plumped for pegs 9 and 10 with me being on peg 9 and my Dad on peg 10.
I was using my Frenzee rod again as Id said I wouldn't change until Dad beat me. Woodhouse allows methods but only In-line so after setting up we cast in.
Start of the match. 8am. We agreed to fish until 1.30pm so it was to be a 5 1/2 Hour match.
The weather was quite sunny but the water was very cold. It had snowed in Doncaster the previous night so once again we were expecting a slow day.
The first 90 minutes passed without so much as a knock. Disappointing really as I was trying out my new baits. (new pellets and boilies)
Just then, my rod went round and I was into a carp. I netted it and it was a nice 5 lb 13 oz common caught on Strawberry Bag Up hard pellet
45 minutes later I landed another carp, this time a 3 lb 12 oz mirror again on the Bag Up hard pellet but this time the chopped worm variety.
At this stage Dad had nothing weighed and I was in control of the match.
The next few hours saw my Dad bank a couple of small F1's to stay in contention but was there to be a late twist?
Dad upped the anti by using worm for the last hour, hair rigging 4 In one cast at one stage but his rod, like mine for the previous few hours stayed still.
Until........
With literally 1 minute of the match to go I hooked another carp, this time on double corn and after a fight I managed to get it in and weighed at 6 lb. This cemented the win and got me the 5 points on offer
I finished with 15 lb 5 oz, Dad back on 4 lb
I will come back in Summer to fish this particular lake and also Cobble Lake on the complex (even though I have read rumours of a fish kill in 2013 and 2015). Granted I did see two small dead fish in the margins but the three fish I caught and Dads two proved that it isn't empty and lets be honest theres always rumours like this about every venue!!
Overall it was an interesting trip and most importantly another win :-)
